A birth that takes place before the completion of 37 weeks is known as premature birth (pre-term baby). Premature babies may come across some medical problems but the severity or risk increases depending on how early the baby was born.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Preterm<\/strong> birth<strong> is categorized as<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Late preterm \u2013 born after 34 weeks<\/li>\n<li>Moderately preterm \u2013 born after the completion of 32 and before the start of 34 weeks<\/li>\n<li>Very preterm \u2013 born between 25 to 32 weeks<\/li>\n<li>Extremely preterm \u2013 at or before 25 weeks of pregnancy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Chances<\/strong> of<strong> having premature birth<\/strong> \u2013<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Pregnant with multiple babies<\/li>\n<li>History of miscarriage or premature birth<\/li>\n<li>Issues with uterus or cervix<\/li>\n<li>Physical trauma<\/li>\n<li>Mother catches an infection<\/li>\n<li>Reduced gap between pregnancies (less than 6 months)<\/li>\n<li>High blood pressure or diabetes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In a few cases, progesterone supplements and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drshivahk.com\/cervical-stitch-cervical-cerclage\/\">cervical cerclage<\/a>, where the cervix is stitched to provide support to the uterus, may help to reduce the chances of preterm.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Signs of<\/strong> premature<strong> birth<\/strong> \u2013<\/h3>\n<p>If you experience sudden contractions, a discharge of mucus from the vagina, water break or decrease of baby movements before 37 weeks, you have to immediately contact your doctor to slow down or stop the labor.<\/p>\n<p>Medicines will be provided to stop contractions. Injections will also be provided to help the baby\u2019s lungs to be stronger and to function efficiently before they are given birth.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Signs of<\/strong> premature<strong> babies<\/strong> \u2013<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Small size and more sharp features due to lack of fat<\/li>\n<li>Labored breathing<\/li>\n<li>Fine layer of hair(lanugo)<\/li>\n<li>Problems in sucking<\/li>\n<li>Body having very low temperature.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A premature baby will require a longer stay at the hospital and the duration may increase based on how premature the baby is. The baby may be placed in NICU for proper care.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Risk<\/strong> associated<strong> with premature birth<\/strong> &#8211;<\/h3>\n<p>The problems may be short term or long term.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Breathing issues<\/li>\n<li>Heart problems<\/li>\n<li>Issues with the digestive tract<\/li>\n<li>Jaundice<\/li>\n<li>Anemia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other risks include development problems which may be visible only later like &#8211;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Language delays, learning and thinking difficulties,<\/li>\n<li>Delay in growth and movement<\/li>\n<li>Issue with hearing, vision<\/li>\n<li>Social or emotional problems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Always keep a constant check about the child\u2019s development and growth.
